Knip, configured with the application, package exports, scripts, QA
harnesses, workers, tools and tests as entry points, reports exports
that no module imports. Each was checked by hand against string-based
and namespace imports.
- Symbols that are still used inside their own module lose only the
`export` keyword (176 constants and helpers).
- Unused re-exports are removed from barrel modules (flight, military,
vessel, CCTV, directions, transit history, local ADS-B and street-level
policy modules).
- Declarations that nothing uses at all are deleted, among them
AIS_WATCHDOG_STATUSES, applyFilter, isRadioCountryCode, compactText,
DENSITY_STOPS, the unused CCTV endpoint constants, and the SDR band
constants.
- Default exports that nothing imports are removed. The ones in
src/data/earthquakes.js, src/data/telegeographySubmarineCables.js,
src/data/wind.js and src/data/bhoteKoshiLocator.js each constructed a
layer instance at import time that nothing used; those instances are
no longer created.
Every export of a package.json entry stays, as does TOMTOM_CREDIT,
which the traffic layer reads from the credits namespace it is given.
Merge origin/main and retain both format-scope additions.
Give StarrySky a separate black environment cube map and release it on destroy.
Guard anime updates when StarrySky is absent, require a visible Normal sky
before anime QA, and compare a lit airplane against black and white controls.
Document the sky background contract and its verification.

The far-plane comment said z = w (the code puts z just under w), the Milky
Way constant is a brightness, not an opacity, and the CDS acknowledgement
lives in the Data attribution popover, not DATA_SOURCES.md.

- qa-anime-sky keeps only the Milky Way case; the satellites and keyless
cases checked an anime shader this branch no longer changes.
- Drop qa-sky-sun-moon.mjs: the viewer-options unit test covers it.
- VisualEffects sets the sky's visibility directly: the viewer always
carries a StarrySky and never outlives the effects.
- Drop the unused star intensity knob, the malformed-row tolerance for
our own pack, the test-only Transforms parameter and a private-name test.
- DATA_SOURCES points to sky/README.md instead of repeating it.

Scene reads skyBox._cubeMap as the environment map that lights models, in
the TEME, flipY layout of Cesium's own sky box; the ICRF Milky Way would
light them rotated. Rename the field so models keep Cesium's default.
Test the anime fade on a real StarrySky and that the viewer gets the sky
as an option (skyBox: false would drop the Sun and Moon). Correct three
comments on the star limit and the Milky Way levels.

The far-plane mask in the anime shader read the post-process depth, which
cannot tell the sky from far geometry: with a layer that clamps the near
plane to 0.1 m (satellites) the whole Earth lost its cel bands, keyless
terrain above the ellipsoid horizon did too, and the atmosphere, Sun and
Moon stopped banding.
Restore the anime shader from main and fade the Milky Way glow with the
style instead: VisualEffects sets skyBox.milkyWayVisibility to
1 - anime intensity. scripts/qa-anime-space-mask.mjs checks all three
cases headless and that the anime sky shows no bands.

- Pass the custom sky box to the Viewer instead of `skyBox: false`, which
also stopped CesiumWidget from creating the Sun and the Moon. Guarded by
scripts/qa-sky-sun-moon.mjs.
- Outside the IAU 2006 tables (before 1975, after ~2050) the preload
resolves without data; remember that span and stay on TEME instead of
preloading and rendering every frame.
- The anime style no longer cel-shades the far plane, where four bands
turned the faint Milky Way into blotches.
- Paint the planets out after the star-removing opening and with the
ring median, so no brighter plateau is left; faces rebuilt.

Cesium's default Tycho-2 sky box is six 1024² JPEGs stretched 3–6× around
the whole-globe view, so space read as an over-compressed JPEG (HAL-627).
The scene now draws its own sky in the Scene#skyBox slot: the 9,096 stars
of the Yale Bright Star Catalogue as point sprites sized in CSS pixels
(magnitude → width and opacity, B−V → colour), over a soft, star-free
Milky Way cube map built from ESO/S. Brunier's panorama (CC BY 4.0). Both
layers share one ICRF→Earth-fixed rotation at the scene clock, with the
TEME rotation filling in until Cesium's IAU 2006 tables load.
Assets total 482 KB, built by scripts/build-bright-stars.mjs and
scripts/build-milky-way.mjs. Frame time and the idle render governor are
unchanged.
